THE TALE OF MELON CITY

The King Orders an Arch to be Built

This story is about a city whose king was lawful and gentle. He orders an arch (curved structure) to be built which would become a symbol of his triumphs and accomplishments. The arch would be constructed on the main road and it would inspire and motivate the people who would see it. As per the orders of the king, the arch was built. The king rode down the main road to inspire others.

यह कहानी एक ऐसे नगर की है जिसका राजा न्यायप्रिय और सज्जन था। वह एक मेहराब (घुमावदार संरचना) बनाने का आदेश देता है जो उसकी विजय और उपलब्धियों का प्रतीक बन जाएगा। मुख्य सड़क पर मेहराब का निर्माण किया जाएगा और इसे देखने वाले लोगों को प्रेरणा और प्रेरणा मिलेगी। राजा के आदेशानुसार मेहराब का निर्माण किया गया। राजा दूसरों को प्रेरित करने के लिए मुख्य सड़क पर सवार हो गया।

The King Loses his Crown and Gets Angry

The arch was built too low and the king’s crown fell down when it struck the arch. It was a disgrace for him. He ordered that the chief of builders should be hanged for this mistake. The arrangements for the hanging were made. The chief of builders was called.

मेहराब बहुत नीचे बनाया गया था और जब राजा का मुकुट मेहराब से टकराया तो वह नीचे गिर गया। यह उनके लिए अपमान की बात थी। उन्होंने आदेश दिया कि इस गलती के लिए बिल्डरों के मुखिया को फांसी दी जानी चाहिए। फांसी के इंतजाम किए गए। बिल्डरों के प्रमुख को बुलाया गया था।

The Blame Game Begins

The chief of builders pleaded that it was not his mistake; it was rather the workmen’s fault. So the king stopped the hanging of the chief builder. He ordered that all the workmen must be hanged instead. The workmen claimed that the bricks used were not of the right size. So the masons were called. They were trembling in fear. The masons in turn blamed the architect for a wrong design.

बिल्डरों के प्रमुख ने निवेदन किया कि यह उनकी गलती नहीं थी; बल्कि यह काम करने वालों की गलती थी। अत: राजा ने राजमिस्त्री के प्रधान की फाँसी बन्द कर दी। उन्होंने आदेश दिया कि इसके बजाय सभी कामगारों को फांसी दी जानी चाहिए। कामगारों ने दावा किया कि इस्तेमाल की गई ईंटें सही आकार की नहीं थीं। इसलिए राजमिस्त्री बुलाए गए। वे डर के मारे कांप रहे थे। राजमिस्त्री ने बदले में वास्तुकार को गलत डिजाइन के लिए दोषी ठहराया।

The King Gets Stuck in a Tricky Situation

The architect was called. The king ordered that the architect must be hanged. The architect reminded the king that he himself had changed the original plan of the arch when it was shown to him sometime back.

The king realised that the blame had shifted to him. It was a tricky situation. The king withdrew for consulting some wise people. He asked for the wisest man in the country. The wisest man was chosen on the criteria that he should be very old.

The person chosen could not walk or see properly and he was carried there by other people. The wisest man said in a shaking voice that the culprit should be punished. He announced that it was the arch which banged against the crown, so it should be hanged.

आर्किटेक्ट को बुलाया गया। राजा ने आदेश दिया कि वास्तुकार को फाँसी पर लटका देना चाहिए। वास्तुकार ने राजा को याद दिलाया कि जब उसे कुछ समय पहले मेहराब की मूल योजना दिखाई गई थी तो उसने खुद ही उसे बदल दिया था।

राजा ने महसूस किया कि दोष उस पर स्थानांतरित हो गया था। यह एक पेचीदा स्थिति थी। राजा कुछ बुद्धिमान लोगों से परामर्श करने के लिए चला गया। उन्होंने देश के सबसे बुद्धिमान व्यक्ति के लिए कहा। सबसे बुद्धिमान व्यक्ति को इस कसौटी पर चुना गया कि वह बहुत बूढ़ा होना चाहिए।

चुना गया व्यक्ति ठीक से चल या देख नहीं सकता था और अन्य लोगों द्वारा उसे वहाँ ले जाया गया। सबसे बुद्धिमान व्यक्ति ने काँपती हुई आवाज में कहा कि अपराधी को सजा मिलनी चाहिए। उन्होंने घोषणा की कि यह मेहराब थी जो ताज से टकराई थी, इसलिए इसे फांसी दी जानी चाहिए।

The Nation Wants a Hanging

The arch was being taken for the hanging when one of the councillors said that the arch actually touched the royal head with respect. The king agreed, but the crowd was getting restless and wanted a hanging. Perceiving the situation, the king ordered that someone must be hanged, guilty or not.

A loop of rope was set up quite high and each man was measured to its height. Only one was tall enough to reach it and that was the king himself. So the king was hanged. The ministers heaved a sigh of relief that someone was hanged or else the crowd might have turned against them.

फाँसी के लिए मेहराब को ले जाया जा रहा था जब पार्षदों में से एक ने कहा कि मेहराब वास्तव में सम्मान के साथ शाही सिर को छूता है। राजा सहमत हो गया, लेकिन भीड़ बेचैन हो रही थी और फांसी चाहती थी। स्थिति को भांपते हुए, राजा ने आदेश दिया कि किसी को दोषी हो या नहीं, उसे फांसी दी जानी चाहिए।

रस्सी का एक फंदा काफी ऊँचा बनाया गया था और प्रत्येक व्यक्ति को उसकी ऊँचाई तक मापा गया था। उस तक पहुँचने के लिए केवल एक ही लंबा था और वह स्वयं राजा था। तो राजा को फाँसी दे दी गई। मंत्रियों ने राहत की सांस ली कि किसी को फांसी हो गई वरना भीड़ उनके खिलाफ हो जाती।

The Dilemma

The ministers now faced the dilemma that the country had no king. They followed their old custom and sent out messengers to proclaim that the next person who would pass the city gate would choose the next king. After some time, an idiot passed the gate and the guards stopped him.

When they asked him to name the king, the idiot said ‘a melon’. This was his standard answer to all the questions as he was very fond of melons.

मंत्रियों को अब इस दुविधा का सामना करना पड़ा कि देश में कोई राजा नहीं था। उन्होंने अपने पुराने रीति-रिवाजों का पालन किया और दूतों को यह घोषणा करने के लिए भेजा कि जो अगला व्यक्ति शहर के फाटक से गुजरेगा, वह अगले राजा को चुनेगा। कुछ देर बाद एक मूर्ख गेट के पास से गुजरा और पहरेदारों ने उसे रोक लिया।

जब उन्होंने उससे राजा का नाम पूछा तो मूर्ख ने कहा ‘एक तरबूज’। यह सभी सवालों का उनका मानक जवाब था क्योंकि उन्हें खरबूजे बहुत पसंद थे।

The Melon King

After the answer given by that idiot, a melon was made the king of the city. The ministers respectfully carried the melon to the throne and set it down on the king’s throne.

This happened long ago. If you now ask the people why their king appears to be a melon, they reply that it is a customary choice. It makes no difference to them  if their king is a melon. They are happy because the king doesn’t interfere in their lives. They live in peace and harmony.

उस मूर्ख के द्वारा दिए गए उत्तर के बाद एक खरबूजे को नगर का राजा बना दिया गया। मंत्रियों ने आदरपूर्वक खरबूजे को सिंहासन तक पहुँचाया और उसे राजा के सिंहासन पर रख दिया।

यह बहुत पहले हुआ था। यदि अब आप लोगों से पूछें कि उनका राजा खरबूजा क्यों प्रतीत होता है, तो वे उत्तर देते हैं कि यह एक प्रथागत पसंद है। उन्हें इससे कोई फर्क नहीं पड़ता  कि उनका बादशाह खरबूजा है। वे खुश हैं क्योंकि राजा उनके जीवन में हस्तक्षेप नहीं करता है। वे शांति और सद्भाव में रहते हैं।
