Poet – (John Keats)

Central Idea:-

A thing of beauty is a joy forever. It never passes into nothingness. Its lovingness increases day after day we watch it. It makes us forget the sorrows and sufferings of the world. It gives us peace of mind and the health of the body. It makes our painful stay on this earth bearable. And thus a thing of beauty provides us shelter and comfort.

Brief Summary (Highlighted):-

The poet says that a thing of beauty is a joy forever. It gives us pleasure. It removes our sadness. It never passes into nothingness. Its beauty increases day after day as we watch it. A thing of beauty is like a quiet bower where we can enjoy a sweet sleep filled with lovely dreams. It can give us health of the body and peace of mind. The poet says that a beautiful thing is a kind of flowery band that binds us to this earth which is otherwise full of grief and sadness.

The poet lists some of the unhappy things about human life on earth. Man always remains depressed at heart. There is a great lack of truly noble souls. Man passes all his days in constant grief or disease. But in spite of all this gloom, there are moments of joy when a man looks at some objects of beauty. Among the beautiful objects, there is the sun, the moon, the cool clear streams, the big and small trees, the daffodils, and the musk roses.

We also derive joy by thinking of nice things in our imagination. In addition, we derive joy from hearing or reading great pieces of literature. The poet calls such beautiful objects ‘ an endless fountain of immortal drink pouring unto us from the heaven’s brink ’. The poet means to say that God himself has created various beautiful objects si that they can give joy to man.
