About the Author: –

This story is written by Alphonse Daudet. This story is about a boy named Franz. Franz was a boy who was not so serious about his studies and used to get distracted very easily.

In 1870’s Franco-Prussian war the Prussia defeated the France and controlled over the two districts of France which were Alsace and Lorraine

About lesson: –

The story starts when France left for his school in morning. He was very late and afraid that his teacher would scold him because he didn’t know anything about the participles which his teacher told him to learn

On the way, he realized that the weather was so good. it was a warm and bright morning. the birds were chippering (चहचहाना) and Prussian soldiers were marching. He decided to stay outside and bunk the school but suddenly he changed his mind and went back towards the school. On the way, he saw that there was a huge crowd around the bulletin board. He ignored that and continued on the way to his school. After reaching the school he realized that the scenario (माहौल) of the school was changed. Usually, there used to have a great bustle (चहलपहल), the sounds of opening and closing of desks, the sound of students who used to repeat their lessons, and the sound of the teacher’s ruler striking(मारना) on the table.

As he reached his classroom, he noticed that his classmates were already in their places and Mr. M Hamel was in the class. He thought that Mr. M Hamel would scold him because he was late but Mr. M Hamel didn’t say anything and told him to take his seat.

After taking a seat he realized that there were some villagers in the back seats of the class and Mr. M Hamel was in his ceremonial clothes which he used to wear on any special occasion or for parents’ teacher meetings. He was unable to understand what was going on

Mr. M Hamel stood up and started the lesson. He said that an order from Berlin has come that only German would be taught in the schools of Alsace and Lorraine therefore this is the last lesson of French. After listening to this Franz was shocked and he understood the reason for the crowd around the bulletin board and the villagers sitting in the back seats.

He realized that he hardly knew to write in French and now he would never get a chance to learn the French language. Suddenly he became more attentive in the class and listened to the whole lesson carefully.

In between the lesson Mr. M Hamel said that we always thought we have plenty (बहुत सारा) of time, we would learn it tomorrow but now you can see where we have come out.

Your parents were not anxious (चिंतित) enough to have you learn and I also deserve to be blamed because I used to send you to water my flowers and missed my lectures because of fishing. He explained everything with so much patience like he wanted to teach everything in one day everyone was silent in the class and Franz noticed that pigeons work cooing on the roof and he thought “will they make them sing in German even the pigeons?”

At the end of the class, Mr. M Hamel said that French is the most beautiful, clear, and logical language in the world and we all need to keep it alive in ourselves. He became so emotional and was not able to say even a word. In this emotional state, he wrote on the blackboard as large as he could

Vive La France (livelong France)

Vive La France (फ्रांस अमर रहे )
