Chapter 11: Hospitality Management

Introduction

  • What is hospitality? It’s how a guest is treated by a host. It’s about making guests feel welcome and comfortable.
  • Why is it important? In India, we believe “Atithi Devo Bhava” (guest is like God), so we take care of our guests.
  • How did it start? People used to stay with family or friends or in simple guesthouses. As more people travelled for business or fun, hotels and other places were built to provide services.

Importance of Hospitality Management

  • The world is getting smaller: People travel within India and abroad for many reasons: business, marketing, government work, studies, religious trips, medical treatment, vacations, visiting family, or shopping.
  • Tourism is growing: People travel to experience different cultures, see historical buildings, and enjoy nature. Events like festivals also attract many visitors.
  • Everyone needs a place to stay: Travelers need a place that feels like home, where they are comfortable, safe, and well-cared for.
  • Hospitality is a big business: Because of all these reasons, the hospitality industry is growing fast!

Basic Concepts

  • Types of places to stay:
    • Hotels: Provide rooms, food, and other services.
    • Motels: Like hotels, but with easy parking.
    • Lodges: Mainly offer a place to sleep, might not have other services.
    • Resorts: Focus on fun activities and relaxation, with lots of amenities and things to do.
    • Furnished Flats: Like apartments with everything you need for a longer stay.
    • Furnished Camps: For people who like hiking and adventure.
  • Other places that offer hospitality:
    • Places for conferences, meetings, and parties
    • Theme parks, cruises, and amusement parks
    • Guesthouses and hospitals
    • Hostels

Departments in a Hospitality Organization

  • Front Office: This is where guests check in and out, get information, and have their first impression of the place.
  • Housekeeping Department: This department keeps everything clean and tidy, from guest rooms to public areas.
  • Food and Beverage Department: This department takes care of the food and drinks, including the kitchen, restaurants, and bars.
  • Support Service Departments: These are the behind-the-scenes departments that keep everything running smoothly, like finance, engineering, and human resources.

The Guest Cycle

  • Before the guest arrives (Pre-arrival): The hotel provides price quotes and takes reservations.
  • When the guest arrives (Arrival): The guest checks in and registers with the hotel.
  • During the stay (Occupancy): The hotel provides services to the guest and makes sure they are comfortable and safe.
  • When the guest leaves (Departure): The guest checks out, and the hotel updates records and may ask for feedback.

Management Functions

  • Planning: Deciding what needs to be done and how to do it.
  • Organizing: Arranging resources and tasks in a logical way.
  • Coordinating: Making sure all the different activities work well together.
  • Staffing: Hiring and training employees.
  • Directing: Guiding and leading employees.
  • Controlling: Making sure things are going according to plan.
  • Evaluating: Checking to see if the goals are being met.

Career Opportunities

  • Lots of jobs: The hospitality industry has jobs at all levels, from managers to housekeepers.
  • Good for young people: Hotels often prefer to hire young people because they have lots of energy and are adaptable.
  • Important qualities: To work in hospitality, you need to be friendly, well-groomed, and have good manners.

Key Terms

  • Hospitality Management: The overall management of hotels and other hospitality businesses.
  • Front Office: The department that interacts with guests during check-in and check-out.
  • Housekeeping: The department that keeps the hotel clean and tidy.
