Chapter 2 The Adventures Of Toto

Toto is Bought by the Narrator’s Grandfather

The narrator’s grandfather was very fond of animals. He bought a monkey from a Tonga-driver for 5 and named it Toto. First, when the grandfather saw Toto tied up to a feeding-trough, he looked very ill and ugly. As the grandfather had his own private zoo with many other animals, he kept the little monkey in it. Toto used his tail as a third hand. He used it to hang from a branch and for scooping up any delicacy that might be out of reach of his hands. Toto’s presence was kept a secret from grandmother as she didn’t like animals. It was kept secretly in a little closet.

वर्णनकर्ता के दादाजी को जानवरों से बहुत लगाव था। उसने एक ताँगा-चालक से पाँच रुपये में एक बंदर खरीदा और उसका नाम टोटो रखा। पहले तो दादाजी ने जब टोटो को हौद से बंधा हुआ देखा तो वे बहुत बीमार और कुरूप लग रहे थे। जैसा कि दादाजी के पास कई अन्य जानवरों के साथ उनका अपना निजी चिड़ियाघर था, उन्होंने उसमें छोटे बंदर को रखा। टोटो ने अपनी पूंछ को तीसरे हाथ की तरह इस्तेमाल किया। वह इसका उपयोग एक शाखा से लटकने के लिए करता था और किसी भी स्वादिष्ट व्यंजन को लेने के लिए करता था जो उसके हाथों की पहुंच से बाहर हो सकता था। टोटो की उपस्थिति दादी से गुप्त रखी गई क्योंकि उसे जानवर पसंद नहीं थे। इसे एक छोटी सी कोठरी में गुप्त रूप से रखा गया था।

Toto Travels Secretly with Grandfather

One day, when grandfather was going to Saharanpur to collect his pension, he decided to take Toto along with him as he did not want to leave him at home. A big black canvas kit bag was provided for Toto so that he could not escape. However, he was caught at Saharanpur station by the ticket collector and classified as a dog, so that grandfather had to also pay his fare.

एक दिन, जब दादाजी अपनी पेंशन लेने के लिए सहारनपुर जा रहे थे, तो उन्होंने टोटो को अपने साथ ले जाने का फैसला किया क्योंकि वह उसे घर पर नहीं छोड़ना चाहते थे। टोटो के लिए एक बड़ा काला कैनवास किट बैग दिया गया ताकि वह भाग न सके। हालांकि, उन्हें टिकट कलेक्टर द्वारा सहारनपुर स्टेशन पर पकड़ा गया और कुत्ते के रूप में वर्गीकृत किया गया, जिससे दादाजी को भी अपना किराया देना पड़ा।

Toto is Finally Accepted in the Family

Gradually grandmother accepted Toto in the house and he was put in the stable with Nana, the donkey. But, Toto teased Nana (donkey) so much that Nana never became friends with Toto.

धीरे-धीरे दादी ने टोटो को घर में स्वीकार कर लिया और उसे गधे नाना के साथ अस्तबल में डाल दिया। लेकिन, टोटो ने नाना (गधे) को इतना चिढ़ाया कि नाना कभी भी टोटो के दोस्त नहीं बने।

Toto Nearly Half Boiled Himself Alive

In winters, Toto had an elaborate bathing ritual and enjoyed bathing with warm water. Due to this, once Toto almost boiled himself alive. A kettle had been put on the stove for making tea for the family. When nobody was there, he felt the water warm enough for a bath, so he climbed in. As the water kept heating up, he kept hopping in it until grandmother took him out, barely alive. Toto continued his antics by tearing clothes to shreds, breaking plates and other utensils etc.

जाड़े के दिनों में टोटो में नहाने की एक विस्तृत रस्म होती थी और वह गर्म पानी से नहाने का आनंद लेता था। इस वजह से एक बार टोटो ने लगभग खुद को जिंदा उबाल ही लिया था। परिवार के लिए चाय बनाने के लिए चूल्हे पर केतली रखी हुई थी। जब वहां कोई नहीं था, तो उसे लगा कि पानी नहाने के लिए पर्याप्त गर्म है, इसलिए वह चढ़ गया। जैसे-जैसे पानी गर्म होता गया, वह उसमें तब तक उछलता-कूदता रहा, जब तक कि दादी ने उसे बाहर नहीं निकाला, बमुश्किल जिंदा। टोटो ने कपड़े फाड़कर, थाली और अन्य बर्तन आदि तोड़कर अपनी हरकतें जारी रखीं।

Toto is Sold Back to Tonga Driver

Toto caused too much loss in the family. Finally grandfather realised that Toto was not the type of pet to be kept in the house. They could not tolerate him any more. At last, grandfather found the Tonga-driver and sold Toto back to him for Rs. 3 and heaved a sigh of relief.

टोटो ने परिवार में बहुत नुकसान किया। अंत में दादाजी को एहसास हुआ कि टोटो घर में रखा जाने वाला पालतू जानवर नहीं है। वे उसे और अधिक सहन नहीं कर सके। अंत में, दादाजी ने टोंगा-चालक को ढूंढ निकाला और टोटो को वापस रुपये में बेच दिया। 3 और राहत की सांस ली।           

Conclusion of The Adventures of Toto

The chapter – The Adventures of Toto illustrates the lesson to students that one must behave responsibly in a congenial environment and should not create nuisance and become intolerable to others.
