What is Matter?
Anything that occupies space and has mass is called matter. 🌌 Everything in the universe, from the air we breathe to the stars in the sky, is made up of matter. 🌏
Physical Nature of Matter 🔬
Matter is Made Up of Particles
- Tiny particles that are too small to be seen with the naked eye make up matter. 🔬
- Evidence for this comes from experiments like dissolving salt or sugar in water, where the substance seems to disappear but actually spreads throughout the water as tiny particles. 💧
- The particles of matter have spaces between them, which allow for the intermixing of different substances. 🧪
Characteristics of Particles of Matter
- Particles of matter are continuously moving. 🔄
- They attract each other, which keeps them together. 🧲
- The strength of attraction varies between different kinds of matter. 🧱
States of Matter
Matter exists in three different states: solid, liquid, and gas. 🧊💧💨 These states arise due to differences in the arrangement and movement of particles.
Solid State
- Solids have a definite shape, distinct boundaries, and a fixed volume. 🧊
- They are rigid and have negligible compressibility. 🧱
- Particles in solids are tightly packed and have limited movement.
Liquid State
- Liquids have a fixed volume but no fixed shape. 💧
- They take the shape of their container. 💧
- They flow easily and are not rigid. 🌊
- Particles in liquids have more space and move more freely than in solids.
Gaseous State
- Gases have no fixed shape or volume. 💨
- They fill the entire container they are placed in. 🎈
- They are highly compressible. 🎈
- Particles in gases have the most space and move randomly at high speeds. 🚀
Can Matter Change its State?
Yes, matter can change its state by changing the temperature or pressure. 🌡️
Effect of Change of Temperature
- Heating a solid increases the kinetic energy of its particles, causing them to vibrate faster and eventually break free from their fixed positions, leading to melting. 🔥
- The temperature at which a solid melts is called its melting point. 🌡️
- The heat energy required to change 1 kg of a solid into a liquid at its melting point is called the latent heat of fusion. 🌡️
- Similarly, heating a liquid increases the kinetic energy of its particles, causing them to move faster and eventually break free from the forces of attraction, leading to boiling. 🔥
- The temperature at which a liquid boils is called its boiling point. 🌡️
- The heat energy required to change 1 kg of a liquid into a gas at its boiling point is called the latent heat of vaporization. 🌡️
Effect of Change of Pressure
- Increasing pressure on a gas can bring its particles closer together, leading to liquefaction. 🗜️
- Decreasing pressure can cause a gas to expand. 🎈
- Solid carbon dioxide (CO2), also known as dry ice, directly changes into a gaseous state on decreasing pressure without becoming a liquid. 🧊💨
Evaporation
- Evaporation is the phenomenon of change of liquid into vapors at any temperature below its boiling point. 💧💨
- It is a surface phenomenon, where particles from the surface of the liquid gain enough energy to overcome the forces of attraction and escape into the vapor state.
Factors Affecting Evaporation
- Increase in surface area increases the rate of evaporation. 🌬️
- Increase in temperature increases the rate of evaporation. 🔥
- Decrease in humidity increases the rate of evaporation. 💧
- Increase in wind speed increases the rate of evaporation. 💨
How Does Evaporation Cause Cooling?
- During evaporation, the particles of liquid absorb energy from the surroundings to regain the energy lost during evaporation. 🌡️
- This absorption of energy from the surroundings makes the surroundings cold. ❄️
Examples of Evaporation in Daily Life
- Wet clothes drying up. 👕
- Sprinkling water on the roof or open ground after a hot sunny day. 🏠
- Wearing cotton clothes in summer. 👚
- Water droplets forming on the outer surface of a glass containing ice-cold water. 🧊
