 Ranga’s Marriage

RANGA’S MARRIAGE

No Fancy Title of the Story

The narrator comments why he had not given any elaborate title to the present story, like ‘Ranganatha’s Vivaha’ or ‘Jagannatha Vijaya’. The reason is that the story is about a common boy, Ranga, and his marriage. He is an accountant’s son and native of village Hosahalli.

वर्णनकर्ता टिप्पणी करता है कि उसने वर्तमान कहानी को कोई विस्तृत शीर्षक क्यों नहीं दिया, जैसे ‘रंगनाथ का विवाह’ या ‘जगन्नाथ विजया’। कारण यह है कि कहानी एक आम लड़के रंगा और उसकी शादी की है। वह एक एकाउंटेंट का बेटा है और होसहल्ली गांव का मूल निवासी है।

The Village of Hosahalli

The narrator mentions that this village is very small and it is not mentioned in geography books. Still he speaks highly about Hosahalli. Even the local doctor, Dr Gundabhatta, who has visited many places outside India, finds it an impressive village.

The village is famous for its sour mangoes and creepers growing in the village pond. The leaves of this creeper could serve as good plates for serving afternoon meals.

But the narrator, Shyama, says that real appreciation of the village can be felt only if one visits it personally and gets acquainted with it.

वर्णनकर्ता उल्लेख करता है कि यह गाँव बहुत छोटा है और भूगोल की पुस्तकों में इसका उल्लेख नहीं है। फिर भी वह होसाहल्ली के बारे में अत्यधिक बोलता है। यहां तक कि स्थानीय चिकित्सक, डॉ गुंडाभट्ट, जिन्होंने भारत के बाहर कई स्थानों का दौरा किया है, उन्हें यह एक प्रभावशाली गांव लगता है।

गाँव अपने खट्टे आमों और गाँव के तालाब में उगने वाली लताओं के लिए प्रसिद्ध है। इस लता की पत्तियाँ दोपहर के भोजन के लिए अच्छी थाली का काम कर सकती हैं।

लेकिन कथावाचक श्यामा का कहना है कि गाँव की वास्तविक सराहना तभी महसूस की जा सकती है जब कोई व्यक्तिगत रूप से वहाँ जाए और उससे परिचित हो।

Ranga’s Home coming was a Great Event

Shyama recalls an incident that happened ten years ago. The village accountant was the first one to gather enough courage to send his son to Bangalore to study. Not many people knew English then. That was why Ranga’s homecoming was a great event. A big crowd went to greet him. The narrator rushed to see him. Everyone was surprised to see that Ranga had not changed. Once they realised that Ranga was unchanged, the crowd of people slowly disappeared. Only the narrator continued to stand there. Ranga had a smile on his face. He still followed the rituals of his caste by respectfully touching the narrator’s feet.

श्यामा को दस साल पहले की एक घटना याद आती है। गाँव का मुनीम सबसे पहले था जिसने अपने बेटे को पढ़ने के लिए बैंगलोर भेजने के लिए पर्याप्त साहस जुटाया। तब बहुत से लोग अंग्रेजी नहीं जानते थे। इसलिए रंगा की घर वापसी एक शानदार घटना थी। उनके स्वागत के लिए भारी भीड़ उमड़ पड़ी। वर्णनकर्ता उसे देखने के लिए दौड़ा। हर कोई यह देखकर हैरान था कि रंगा नहीं बदला था। एक बार जब उन्होंने महसूस किया कि रंगा अपरिवर्तित है, तो लोगों की भीड़ धीरे-धीरे गायब हो गई। केवल वर्णनकर्ता वहीं खड़ा रहा। रंगा के चेहरे पर मुस्कान थी। वह अभी भी आदरपूर्वक वर्णनकर्ता के पैर छूकर अपनी जाति के रीति-रिवाजों का पालन करता था।

The Narrator Decides to Get Ranga Married

The same afternoon Ranga went to the narrator’s house with a couple of oranges in his hand. The narrator thought that such a fine and generous boy should get married and settle down. He enquired about his plan to get married. Ranga said that he didn’t want to get married soon. He was searching for the right girl who was mature enough. Secondly, he wanted to marry a girl he admired. He was not in favour of the arranged marriages prevalent in society. Till he got a girl of his choice, he wanted to remain a bachelor.

The narrator was distressed to learn about Ranga’s views on marriage but he made up his mind that very soon he would get Ranga married.

उसी दोपहर रंगा अपने हाथ में दो संतरे लेकर वर्णनकर्ता के घर गया। वर्णनकर्ता ने सोचा कि ऐसे अच्छे और उदार लड़के को शादी करके घर बसाना चाहिए। उन्होंने शादी करने की योजना के बारे में पूछताछ की। रंगा ने कहा कि वह जल्द शादी नहीं करना चाहते। वह सही लड़की की तलाश कर रहे थे जो काफी परिपक्व हो। दूसरा, वह उस लड़की से शादी करना चाहता था जिसे वह पसंद करता था। वे समाज में प्रचलित अरेंज मैरिज के पक्ष में नहीं थे। जब तक उसे अपनी पसंद की लड़की नहीं मिल जाती, वह कुंवारा ही रहना चाहता था।

शादी के बारे में रंगा के विचारों के बारे में जानने के लिए वर्णनकर्ता व्यथित था लेकिन उसने मन बना लिया कि बहुत जल्द वह रंगा की शादी करवा देगा।

The Narrator Found a Suitable Girl for Ranga

The narrator found the most suitable girl for him. It was Rama Rao’s niece Ratna, a pretty girl of eleven who had come to stay with him after her parents died. She was from a big town, so she knew how to play the veena and the harmonium. She also had a sweet voice.

वर्णनकर्ता को उसके लिए सबसे उपयुक्त लड़की मिली। यह रामा राव की भतीजी रत्ना थी, जो ग्यारह वर्ष की एक सुंदर लड़की थी, जो अपने माता-पिता की मृत्यु के बाद उनके साथ रहने आई थी। वह एक बड़े शहर से थी, इसलिए वह वीणा और हारमोनियम बजाना जानती थी। उसकी मधुर वाणी भी थी।

The Narrator Starts Playing Match-Maker

The next morning, the narrator told Rama Rao’s wife to send Ratna to his house to fetch some buttermilk. Ratna knew the narrator as he was a frequent visitor to Rama Rao’s place. Ratna came to the narrator’s house. When Ratna came, he requested her to sing a song. It was Friday, so she was wearing a saree.

अगली सुबह, वर्णनकर्ता ने रामा राव की पत्नी से कहा कि वह कुछ छाछ लाने के लिए रत्ना को उसके घर भेज दे। रत्ना वर्णनकर्ता को जानती थी क्योंकि वह रामाराव के घर अक्सर आता-जाता था। रत्ना वर्णनकर्ता के घर आई। जब रत्ना आई तो उसने उससे गाना गाने का अनुरोध किया। शुक्रवार का दिन था, इसलिए उसने साड़ी पहन रखी थी।

Ranga’s Disappointment

Meanwhile, Ranga came to the narrator’s house and stopped at the threshold. He didn’t want the singing to stop, but he was curious to see the singer. He was enchanted by her and kept glancing at her. After a while Ranga asked she was married a year ago. Ranga was extremely disappointed to hear this. The narrator noticed signs of disappointment on Ranga’s face. Ranga left after sometime.

इस बीच, रंगा वर्णनकर्ता के घर आया और दहलीज पर रुक गया। वह नहीं चाहता था कि गायन बंद हो, लेकिन वह गायक को देखने के लिए उत्सुक था। वह उस पर मुग्ध हो गया और उसे निहारता रहा। थोड़ी देर बाद रंगा ने पूछा कि उसकी शादी एक साल पहले हुई है। रंगा यह सुनकर बहुत निराश हुआ। वर्णनकर्ता ने रंगा के चेहरे पर निराशा के चिह्न देखे। रंगा कुछ देर बाद चला गया।

The Narrator’s Plan

The next morning, the narrator met the astrologer, better known as Shastri, and tutored him about his plan in Ranga’s case. In the afternoon, the narrator met Ranga, who appeared as disturbed as he was yesterday. The narrator suggested to meet Shastri and enquire about what was worrying him. Ranga did not protest and went to meet Shastri with the narrator. Shastri pretended surprise and spoke about meeting the narrator after a long time.

The narrator almost ruined his own plan by saying that he had already met Shastri that very morning but Shastri saved it by changing the sentence.

The narrator told Shastri that something was worrying poor Ranga and they had come to seek his help. After making a pretence of some calculations, Shastri said that it was about a girl. To the narrator’s question as to who that girl was, Shastri said that she had the name of something found in the ocean – Kamala, Pachchi, Moss, Pearl or Ratna – the precious stone.

अगली सुबह, वर्णनकर्ता ज्योतिषी से मिला, जिसे शास्त्री के नाम से जाना जाता है, और उसे रंगा के मामले में उसकी योजना के बारे में सिखाया। दोपहर में, वर्णनकर्ता की मुलाकात रंगा से हुई, जो कल की तरह ही परेशान दिखाई दे रहा था। वर्णनकर्ता ने शास्त्री से मिलने और यह पूछने का सुझाव दिया कि उन्हें किस बात की चिंता है। रंगा ने कोई विरोध नहीं किया और वर्णनकर्ता के साथ शास्त्री से मिलने गया। शास्त्री ने आश्चर्य का नाटक किया और लंबे समय के बाद कथावाचक से मिलने की बात कही।

कथावाचक ने यह कहकर अपनी योजना को लगभग बर्बाद कर दिया कि वह पहले ही सुबह शास्त्री से मिल चुका था लेकिन शास्त्री ने वाक्य बदलकर इसे बचा लिया।

कथावाचक ने शास्त्री से कहा कि बेचारे रंगा को कुछ चिंता है और वे उसकी मदद लेने आए हैं। शास्त्री ने कुछ गणनाओं का ढोंग करने के बाद कहा कि यह एक लड़की के बारे में है। कथावाचक के इस प्रश्न पर कि वह लड़की कौन थी, शास्त्री ने कहा कि उसके पास समुद्र में पाई जाने वाली किसी वस्तु का नाम था – कमला, पच्ची, काई, मोती या रत्न – कीमती पत्थर।

The Narrator’s Plan Succeeds

The narrator’s plan was bearing fruit. There was some surprise on Ranga’s face and even some happiness. On their return, Shyama passed in front of Rama Rao’s house.

Ratna was standing at the door. The narrator went inside Rama Rao’s house and came back a little later. He had a surprised look on his face. He told Ranga that there was some wrong information given to him. Ratna was not married. He also enquired of Ranga whether what Shastri had indicated was true. Shyama asked Ranga that he is thinking about Ratna. Ranga admitted that whatever Shastri said about the girl was true. Now, he wanted to get married to Ratna.

वर्णनकर्ता की योजना फलीभूत हो रही थी। रंगा के चेहरे पर कुछ आश्चर्य था और कुछ खुशी भी। उनके लौटने पर, श्यामा रामाराव के घर के सामने से गुजरे।

रत्ना दरवाजे पर खड़ी थी। वर्णनकर्ता रामा राव के घर के अंदर गया और थोड़ी देर बाद वापस आया। उसके चेहरे पर आश्चर्य के भाव थे। उसने रंगा से कहा कि उसे कुछ गलत सूचना दी गई है। रत्ना की शादी नहीं हुई थी। उन्होंने रंगा से यह भी पूछा कि क्या शास्त्री ने जो संकेत दिया था वह सच था। श्यामा ने रंगा से पूछा कि वह रत्ना के बारे में सोच रहा है। रंगा ने स्वीकार किया कि शास्त्री ने लड़की के बारे में जो कुछ भी कहा वह सच था। अब वह रत्ना से शादी करना चाहता था।

Ranga and Ratna Get Married

Finally Ranga and Ratna got married. All the idealism of Ranga was forgotten as he was totally fascinated by Ratna’s beauty and sweet voice. They named their first child Shyama, as because of Shyama’s (the narrator) efforts they had got married. Years later, Ranga invited the narrator for dinner on the occasion of his 3 year old son’s birthday. The son was also named Shyama in honour of the narrator. Thus, Ranga was leading a happy married life with Ratna.

अंत में रंगा और रत्ना ने शादी कर ली। रंगा के सभी आदर्शवाद को भुला दिया गया क्योंकि वह रत्ना की सुंदरता और मधुर आवाज पर पूरी तरह से मोहित हो गया था। उन्होंने अपने पहले बच्चे का नाम श्यामा रखा, क्योंकि श्यामा (कथावाचक) के प्रयासों के कारण उन्होंने शादी कर ली थी। वर्षों बाद, रंगा ने वर्णनकर्ता को अपने 3 वर्षीय बेटे के जन्मदिन के अवसर पर रात के खाने पर आमंत्रित किया। कथावाचक के सम्मान में पुत्र का नाम भी श्यामा रखा गया। इस प्रकार, रंगा रत्ना के साथ एक सुखी वैवाहिक जीवन जी रहा था।
