Introduction — Means of Transportation, Communication and Trade
Trade, transport and communication are closely related and complement each other in the economic development of a country. They act as the lifelines of an economy — carrying people, goods, services and information from producers to consumers, and connecting one part of the country with another. Efficient means of transportation are pre-requisites for fast development because they help in the exchange of goods, ideas, and knowledge. Development of the world as a “global village” has been due to advancement in communication technology.
India, with its vast size and diversity of terrain, requires a well-developed network of transportation to link remote areas with cities, and to reach international markets. The chapter covers roadways, railways, pipelines, waterways, airways, communication networks, international trade and tourism as a trade — all of which together sustain India’s national economy.
Roads
India has one of the largest road networks in the world, with a total length of about 62.16 lakh km (as per NCERT). Roads carry nearly 90% of India’s passenger traffic and about 65% of freight, because road transport is economical for short distances, can traverse different terrains, and offers door-to-door service.
Types of Roads
- National Highways (NH): Link extreme parts of the country and are constructed and maintained by the Central Public Works Department (CPWD). They connect state capitals, major cities, ports and provide the backbone of the road network.
- State Highways (SH): Roads linking a state capital with different district headquarters, constructed and maintained by the State Public Works Department (PWD).
- District Roads: Connect the district headquarters with other places of the district; maintained by the Zila Parishad.
- Rural Roads: Link rural areas and villages with towns; account for a large share of the total length of roads. These have received special impetus under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY), launched to provide all-weather road connectivity to unconnected villages.
- Border Roads: Constructed and maintained by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO). These roads are of strategic importance in border areas, help in the rapid movement of troops and supplies, and have improved accessibility in remote and difficult terrains such as the northern and north-eastern border areas.
- Other Roads: Includes projects like the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana roads and other special-purpose roads.
Golden Quadrilateral Super Highways
The Golden Quadrilateral (GQ) is a network of super/expressways connecting India’s four biggest metropolitan cities — Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata. Its purpose is to reduce the distance and travel time between the mega cities of India. This project was undertaken by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI).
North-South and East-West Corridors
The North-South Corridor links Srinagar (Jammu & Kashmir) with Kanniyakumari (Tamil Nadu), including a Kochi-Salem spur. The East-West Corridor connects Silchar (Assam) with Porbandar (Gujarat). Together with the Golden Quadrilateral, these corridors aim to minimise the time and distance between the major delivery centres of India.
Density of Roads
The density of roads (length of road per 100 sq km of area) varies greatly from one state to another in India, ranging from as low as about 10 km in Jammu & Kashmir to as high as 375 km in Kerala (figures vary by state and year, illustrating uneven distribution). In general, road density is higher in the plains and lower in hilly, forested and desert regions.
Railways
India has one of the largest railway networks in the world and is regarded as Asia’s largest railway network under single management. Indian Railways is the main carrier of goods and passengers, and has helped in developing industry, agriculture and unifying the economic life of the country by facilitating fast movement of goods over long distances.
Problems Faced by Indian Railways
- Overcrowding: Trains, especially in cities and during peak hours, remain overcrowded, causing inconvenience and delays.
- Uneven distribution due to physiography: Physical, economic and administrative factors have affected the development of the rail network in different regions. Some regions, such as the mountainous, hilly and densely forested areas of the Himalayas or the north-east, and the sandy plains of western Rajasthan, are poorly served by railways because of difficult terrain.
- Old infrastructure and slow modernisation: Signalling, tracks and rolling stock require constant modernisation to meet rising demand.
Zones and Divisions of Indian Railways
For efficient management, Indian Railways has been divided into a number of zones, each headed by a General Manager. Each zone is further sub-divided into divisions, controlled by a Divisional Railway Manager. This zone-and-division structure helps in decentralised administration, better maintenance of tracks and stations, and more efficient day-to-day operation across such a vast network spread over different terrains and states.
Pipelines
Pipelines are now used to transport crude oil, petroleum products and natural gas / LPG from oil and natural gas fields to refineries, and further to markets, avoiding the trans-shipment losses and delays involved with tankers and railways. Pipelines can also carry solids that have been converted into slurry.
Important Pipeline Networks
- The Mumbai High – Gujarat – Punjab pipeline (Bombay High–Koyali–Ahmedabad and extended up to Jalandhar in Punjab, via Koyali in Gujarat) links the oilfields of Gujarat and Mumbai High with refineries at Koyali (Gujarat) and Mathura (Uttar Pradesh), and further connects up to Punjab. This is one of the important networks carrying crude oil and petroleum products to different parts of northern and western India.
- The Hazira–Vijaipur–Jagdishpur (HVJ) gas pipeline connects Hazira in Gujarat to Jagdishpur in Uttar Pradesh via Vijaipur in Madhya Pradesh. It links up the gas fields in Gujarat and Mumbai High with fertiliser, power and industrial complexes in western and northern India, and has further extensions to Kanpur, Anta, Auraiya and other places.
Pipelines have reduced the burden on the road and rail network for the transportation of petroleum and gas, and are considered the most convenient and effective mode for transporting liquids and gases over long distances.
Waterways
Waterways are the cheapest means of transport, most suitable for carrying heavy and bulky goods. Waterways consume very little energy and are a fuel-efficient and eco-friendly mode of transport.
Inland Waterways
India has about 14,500 km of navigable waterways, contributing nearly 1% of the country’s transportation. The Government of India has declared certain stretches as National Waterways (NW) to promote inland water transport. Important examples include:
- National Waterway No. 1 (NW1): The Ganga river between Allahabad (Prayagraj) and Haldia (1,620 km).
- National Waterway No. 2 (NW2): The Brahmaputra river between Sadiya and Dhubri (891 km).
- National Waterway No. 3 (NW3): The West-Coast Canal in Kerala (Kottapuram–Kollam, 205 km), along with the Champakara and Udyogmandal canals.
- National Waterway No. 4 (NW4): Includes stretches of rivers such as the Godavari and Krishna, along with the Kakinada–Puducherry canal.
Besides the officially numbered National Waterways, other inland water routes such as the backwaters and canal systems of Goa (the Mandovi and Zuari rivers connected by the Cumbarjua canal) are also used for the transportation of iron ore. Rivers, canals, backwaters and lakes together form the inland waterway system of India.
Ocean Routes and Ports (Major Ports)
Ocean routes carry the bulk of India’s international trade because sea transport is well suited for carrying heavy and bulky cargo across long distances at low cost. India has a vast coastline of about 7,516.6 km, along which are located 12 major ports and about 200 minor and intermediate ports.
The major ports of India, moving from the west coast to the east coast, include:
- Kandla (Gujarat) — first port developed after independence, in the Kachchh region, to ease the pressure on Mumbai port.
- Mumbai — the biggest port, with a spacious natural and well-sheltered harbour.
- JNPT (Jawaharlal Nehru Port, Nhava Sheva) — developed to relieve growing pressure on Mumbai port; the largest container port in India.
- Marmagao (Goa) — handles the largest quantity of iron-ore export.
- New Mangalore (Karnataka) — exports iron ore concentrates and coffee.
- Cochin (Kochi) — situated at the entrance of a lagoon; called the “Queen of the Arabian Sea.”
- Chennai — one of the oldest artificial ports on the east coast.
- Vishakhapatnam — the deepest landlocked and well-protected port, handles iron ore, petroleum and other cargo.
- Paradip (Odisha) — specialises in the export of iron ore.
- Haldia (West Bengal) — built to relieve growing pressure on the Kolkata port.
Minor ports, though far more numerous than major ports, handle a much smaller share of cargo. They mainly serve local and regional trade, and some also facilitate coastal shipping.
Airways
The air travel network in India is the most important means of transport for covering long distances in a very short time, especially over regions of difficult terrain such as high mountains, dreary deserts, dense forests, and long stretches of the sea. It provides quick and efficient services and, being costlier than other means of transport, is used mostly by people who can afford it.
- Air transport was nationalised in 1953 and has since been re-opened to private participation, with several domestic airlines now operating alongside Air India and its subsidiaries.
- Air services help provide connectivity to inaccessible areas such as northeastern states, and hilly and remote regions.
- Pawan Hans provides helicopter services to hilly and inaccessible areas as well as to areas affected by natural calamities, and also serves the petroleum sector by carrying personnel and supplies to off-shore oil installations.
Communication
Communication network has revolutionised the movement of information across the world, transforming it into a “global village”. Communication services are broadly grouped into personal communication and mass communication.
Personal Communication — the Postal Network
India has one of the largest postal networks in the world, serving both personal communication and small parcel transportation needs. Mail is broadly divided into six categories:
- First-class mail
- Second-class mail
- Ordinary post
- Registered post
- Insured post
- Value payable post (VPP)
First-class mail includes letters and postcards, which are transmitted by air, and second-class mail includes book packets, registered newspapers and periodicals, which are carried by surface mail (rail, road, and waterways).
Telecommunication Network
India’s telecommunication network is one of the largest in the world, providing effective and quick means of transferring information and ideas across the country. It has undergone rapid expansion and modernisation, connecting even remote and rural areas.
Mass Communication
Mass communication provides entertainment and information on numerous issues to a large number of people simultaneously. All India Radio (Akashvani) broadcasts a variety of programmes in national, regional and local languages, while Doordarshan, the national television channel, broadcasts a wide range of educational and entertainment programmes. Newspapers and magazines are also published in various Indian and foreign languages.
Satellite Communication — INSAT
India has adopted a multi-purpose satellite system called the Indian National Satellite System (INSAT) for domestic communications, meteorological observations, and other data services. This satellite network is used for television broadcasting, telecommunications, meteorology, and disaster warning systems, and has significantly strengthened India’s communication infrastructure.
International Trade
The exchange of goods among people, states and countries is known as trade, and it is carried on through markets spread over regions, countries or the world. Trade between two countries is called international trade. It may take place through sea, air or land routes.
Types of International Trade
- Import trade: Purchase of goods and services from foreign countries.
- Export trade: Selling of goods and services produced within the country to foreign countries.
- Entrepot trade: Also known as re-export, where goods are imported from one country and then exported to another country, i.e. exporting after importing.
Balance of Trade
The balance of trade of a country is the difference between its export and import. When the value of exports exceeds the value of imports, it is called a favourable balance of trade. On the other hand, if the value of imports exceeds the value of exports, it is known as an unfavourable balance of trade.
Changing Pattern of India’s Foreign Trade
At the time of independence, India mainly exported primary products such as raw materials and agricultural products, and imported manufactured goods. Over the decades, the composition, direction and volume of India’s trade have changed remarkably:
- India now exports a wide range of items — agricultural and allied products, ores and minerals, gems and jewellery, chemical and allied products, engineering goods, and petroleum products.
- Imports include petroleum, machinery, electronic goods, gold and silver, pearls and precious stones, transport equipment, and chemicals.
- India’s trading partners have also diversified over time, extending trade relations to almost all major regions of the world.
Tourism as a Trade
In India, tourism is also a trade. About 15 million people are engaged in the tourism industry. Tourism is important in view of employment generation, revenue earner, and cultural value.
- It promotes national integration by bringing people of different regions, languages and cultures closer together, and fosters international brotherhood/understanding among people of different countries.
- It provides support to local handicrafts and cultural pursuits, generating employment in fields such as transport, accommodation, and guide services.
- Tourism also helps to earn foreign exchange for the country, as around 2.7 million foreign tourists visit India every year, apart from a large number of domestic tourists.
- Places of tourist interest include heritage monuments, historical monuments, forts, national parks, wildlife sanctuaries, places of scenic beauty, and cultural and religious sites.
- The Government of India has launched several campaigns, most notably “Incredible India”, to promote India as a tourist destination among domestic and international travellers.
